Assumptions
to help validate my secondary research I decided to do a survey to validate or discredit assumptions with my primary research and interviews.
Women who spend money on a gym membership would also purchase an exercise app
Most women don't like using weights/weight equipment at the gym without guidance
Women who exercise regularly prefer under an hour routines
Women who exercise also enjoy the social network that accompanies it
Women prefer to workout with a companion; it holds them accountable and they enjoy the support
Women who exercise struggle to find a routine (options overload)
Women who exercise prefer cardio to lifting weights
Women who exercise prefer to socialize in a gym setting rather than an online setting
Primary Research
3 remote interviews and 20 google form responses later . . .
Confirmed many had gym memberships that were either unused or used for only for cardio.
Would purchase an additional membership cost to their current gym membership if there was exercise guidance and socialization.
Many are ios users, which gave data on the native app to design first.
38% were looking to reduce their spend, and ultimately cancel their gym membership.
Alternative fitness programs are still in demand.
Since this project was built during my Web Dev bootcamp, it was ultimately built using react rather than native.
Synthesis
Analyze + Define
synthesizing the data to project objectives
Affordability
Women are willing to spend money for an exercise application regardless of having a gym membership.
Research Themes
Understanding
People who exercise, however predominantly women, want guidance on moves they are not familiar with before attempting.
Socialization
People who exercise want to connect with other similar routine adults regardless of in person or online.
Persona
Personas are archetypical users whose goals and characteristics represent the needs of a larger group of users. By using personas, one can always reference and keep the users in mind. It also helps keep a store line coherent while designing.
Carey Blake
Age: 28
Carey is a go-getter at work and life, and although she works long hours, she loves to exercise on a regular basis. She makes sure to do cardio, but wants a new routine for building muscle to stay healthy, but doesn't know where to start when it comes to weight lifting or body weight training. She also doesn't have time for an hour long workout, so whatever she does must be efficient for her time.
Her job requires long hours and travel.
Primary
Olivia Smith
Age: 36
Olivia is a new mom who wants to get back to a fitness routine before her maternity leave is over.
She has been an on-again, off-again gym-goer for years, but is self-conscious post-baby around the equipment. She would prefer body weight exercises to go along with her cardio, but can't figure out what moves to do. Being a new mom, whatever she decides to do must be less than an hour.
She and her husband both work full-time jobs.

Market Research
I examined the current market for circuit training and other exercise apps. I also looked at daily routine and fitness apps that had a focus on socializing since the app would be based on a circuit training routine and socializing with other users for support.
Tone It Up is a subscription workout and community platform targeted to women.
Tone it Up offers an in-depth exercise line-up, with circuits, live-join classes, on-demand options, and even stretching classes that provide the user with an incredible amount of variety every time they sign into the app. Tone it up also includes major socialization both on the app and in-person, as the creators of the app host live events.
FITON is a free workout and fitness plan app that is targeted for those who want to share their fitness experience.
This is the social butterfly fitness app. The fitness aspect of this app is lesser than the paid membership apps, but the focus on community is where it shines.
This app offers users the ability to share workouts with friends, send friends favorite advice articles, plan meals together, celebrate together, and create messaging groups.
StrongHer is a subscription workout and community platform targeted to women.
Similar to Tone It Up in many aspects. The subscription cost is slightly more reasonable.
StrongHer offers an in-depth social network with a real-life fitness trainer that is introduced to users upon sign-up. Users are given the trainers social media accounts and training background, adding credibility to the app.
Wire framing, prototyping and testing
It took 3 iterations to get to the final design. Through iterative user testing I improved my product each time.

Brand Color Breakdown
I chose colors based on the words for the mood board. I pulled colors out of the mood board in InVision and tested them out. The goal was to find the balance between energizing, focused/motivating, feminine, and strong.
I turned to natural elements and sensations that evoked the feeling I was looking for and pulled from those colors. I added tint and saturation, and started to make new color palettes to test.
I opted for the teals and gray tones based on my deeper psychology analysis mixed with peer feedback. The teal adds a sense of energy and movement while gray is a focused and grounded color. Perfect for the apps intention.
I did also incorporate the pink and gold in brief and strategic ways. Both colors have mood-boosting and energizing effects on the subconscious, supporting the apps intention.

Measures of success
Marketing
-
retention of users as they continue to connect, see their fitness progress, look for events, and plan future health/fitness goals
-
sign up rate stays steady as new fitness seekers look for affordable workouts and fitness community
Final Marketing Website
I wanted to push my skills and try a parallax scrolling in Figma.
Due to time constraints and my matrix it has not been completed yet.
Stay tuned for that added feature along with the desktop version of the final marketing website; they're coming soon.
